Hendrix. Marley. ‘Pac. B.I.G. History is littered with legends who burned brightest just before they burned out. For two years now, LIL WAYNE has been just that hot, spitting out classic albums, mixtapes, and cameos at a ferocious pace. But with crossover success only one song away, Wayne can’t seem to shake the cloud of controversy- drugs, guns, and girl trouble- hanging over his every move. Benjamin Meadows-Ingram hops on a smoky tour bus with the best rapper alive, and dares to ask whether the most dangerous man in Wayne’s world is Wayne himself.
How many of you out there are feeling my son?
There’s a white girl. But isn’t there always? This one’s in her mid- 20s. She’s about six feet tall in strappy two-inch heels. She’s got on a silver dress with spaghetti straps—it hangs loosely, suggestively, over her fit frame before stopping mid-thigh. And she’s teetering around the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, clinging to a silver clutch and a half-empty champagne flute. The occasion? The Big Easy Billiards Bash and Afterparty, hosted by
New Orleans Saints star running back Reggie Bush and brand-new Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal. The bash is just one of many celebrity events popping off in the Big Easy on this Friday in February, the first official night of NBA All-Star Weekend 2008.
Bush? Shaq? Nowhere in sight. But no matter, the star attraction has just materialized: Ladies and gentlemen, Lil Wayne is in the building.
At first his presence is simply felt—or make that, heard.
Posted up in a service area just outside the ballroom, Wayne stands off in a corner, by himself, leaning on a wall next to a rack of ice and soda machines. Idle hotel employees gawk. Through a set of double doors, 15 yards away, Wayne’s surrogate father and boss, Cash Money Records co-CEO Bryan “Baby” Williams, commands the crowd, ripping through his 2002 street hit, “What Happened To That Boy.” As Baby prowls the stage, Wayne fires ad libs into a wireless mic from his perch in the hall while shooting off text messages with his free hand.
Then the real show begins. “How many of you out there are feeling my son?” Baby asks the throng pressing tighter against the stage. The crowd roars and Wayne springs into action. Passing his still-open flip phone to one of the 20-plus dudes rolling with the Cash Money crew this evening, Wayne takes a sip from the triple-stacked Styrofoam cups he almost always keeps close at hand, pushes through the doors, and makes a quick dash to the stage. He bounds up five metal stairs and into the spotlight—mic in hand, flashing
his blinding grin.
The pounding organs of Wayne’s—um, scratch that—Playaz Circle’s ’hood anthem, “Duffle Bag Boy,” rattle the rafters. “If I don’t do nothing, I’ma baaallllllll!” Wayne belts. And the place goes ape-shit. “I’m counting all day like the clock on the waaaalllll!”
Wayne throws his whole body into the performance, two-stepping
across the stage, tossing his head full of dreads with abandon, and delivering lines as if each word sends a shock up his spine. The music controls him; the fans adore him. As he plows through favorites like 2006’s “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy,” and last year’s “Pop Bottles” and “Prostitute,” he plays with his flow, singing some lines, blazing through others. For his frenetic verse from DJ Khaled’s recent “We Takin’ Over,” he holds out the mic, and lip synchs the words while the crowd fills in the blanks.
He’s consummate showman, with the threads to match—Marc Jacobs aviators, crisp dark-wash Levi’s accented with a Louis Vuitton bandana and a chain wallet hanging from the pockets, snakeskin adidas mids, an impeccable white V-neck, and what can only be described as one of the flyest peacoats known to man.
Within 20 minutes, the set thunders to a close, and ol’ girl knows it’s time to make her move. As Wayne skips offstage, she drifts past the venue’s lax security, produces a digital camera from her clutch, and starts doing everything she can to corral Wayne for an impromptu photo op.
“Lil Wayne! Lil Wayne!” she calls, juggling the camera, the clutch, and the glass while attempting to get an arm over his shoulder for the money shot. Wayne keeps his head down, paying her no mind as he makes his way toward a service exit, and the customized maroon Prevost H3-45 tour bus waiting for him at the loading dock out back.
But homegirl is insistent, and as soon as her arm hits his coat, it’s
greeted with a get-the-fuck-off-me shrug that sends her camera clattering to the floor. “Lil Waaaynne,” she pleads, scooping up her goods so she can continue the pursuit. “Lil Wayne?!” she says again, to anyone who will listen. “Is something wrong with him?”
But Lil Wayne is already gone.

What folks don't understand they tend to throw negative comments. Weezy is not for everyone because their imagination is so limited. Weezy is like no other individual and shouldn't be classified with anyone else. U have to accept Weezy for Weezy and he's here to entertain the public not just one person and yes sometime entertainers don't pay attention to some fans for whatever reason..but a true fan understands it's not personal. The music is beautiful and I know Wayne believes in his craft and I believe Wayne has also mastered the craft and took it another level. That's my opinion and what I strongly believe in and it's may be different from another view. We all have a choice to support whichever artist but Lil Wayne is my #1 draft pick because I love the music not the man..I appreciate the man who has blessed the music but the music is what I feel and love and respect becasue it is made from the heart. Reality is Weezy can't take a picture with everyone after a show because if he took one well it won't just be that one so what's wrong with u.(the last comment) What makes one fan so special to get a picture when there's millions of fans wanting the same thing I love Weezy and respect his swagga and he's human and has faults like any other individual. He just has a gift and if your feelings get hurt because he doesn't want to be bothered..if your a real fan..die hard..suck it up and wish for better luck next time..

Wayne wants to be like Bob Marley, and Tupac?? give it a few millenniums, and maybe one day with thousands of miles on the record you could be like them. But first, let other rappers do it, can't compare to eminem, can't compare to J.

Just you and me vibe. i have heard that Rap legend's back, yes i'm talking about EMINEM, SLIM SHADY da man. i have heard a lot of rumors, and i'll love to see vibe a trusty source to do something, an interview, a cover story anything. Just get down some facts. 50's been talking, he says Em's ok. i want something more than 50 word.

I'm a fan of Lil'Wayne. More than that, I study him. Sounds strange, but it's real. I'm so fascinated by this dude. His mind is so complex and to many, when reading his interviews, he seems like hie's crazy! But in actuality, I just think he's an intellectual who is not afraid to take knowledge and individuality to the highest level. I read all of his interviews, just to take in his language and his concepts. It may seem as if he's rambling but he's really painting a vivid picture if you choose to read between the lines. He puts this knowledge into his music and just does him. And he can do it all with a "F*** you" sign to any people he hate him or try to rape him of his respect. I can appreciate that. No, he's not perfect. Yes he is apart of the Blood gang. Yes, he smokes weed, and I definitely don't advocate or support that. However, no one can truthfully deny him of his genius. I can respect somebody like that. For real. The journalist who composed this article was on point in capturing his persona. The last sentence shows his mystery. "But Lil Wayne is already gone". It's almost like, no one can ever really reach him the way they would like. I hope to one day meet this crazy-cool-swag-to-fresh-genius dude.

Yes we do love wezzy, wezzy knows we love wezzy, but we also have to ask ourselves Y do we love him. We love him for being wezzy and that's what he going to be. What we see from wezzy is wezzy nothing more and nothing less. Take n e thing away form him and he's not wezzy. lil wanye is going to do him regradless to what ppl say he needs to stop doing or not. he's not going stop until he's ready and until GOD is ready for him to stop, and he will learn form it. That nigga is a ground ass man .He said that he gets on his knees everynight and pray's. he said god has him. after saying that you can only love him for what is. EVERYTHING WORKS OUT FOR THE GOOD, weather bad or good, it makes you a better person and he will be that when the storm is clear a better man.

Out of the hand full of Major Rap artist out (Platinum status) Lil Wayne has stood amongst the top of them. But every rapper that raps proclaims he is the best rapper alive. It is up to the audience to proclaim that title for you cause if your as dope as you say then thats what the people will say. Lil wayne has been in the game for over a decade but has really only been relavent since Tha Carter, which was a 9 out of 10 album. Cash Money had nothing to do with the Southern movement that Master P's No Limit built, We are just starting to see the real Wanye these past couple years, before he was just another rapper who rapped about nothing but money and cars.

This Vibe issue touched my heart. I read almost every Vibe since i was born its like an obsession. Im obsessed with Lil Wayne. Reading his interview/article touched me in a hard place. I cant say im in love with Lil Wayne because i never meet him in person but i can say that I'm in love with his swagg. And yes i can say that he has the most in the industry. His "I don't give A f**k" attitude is what draws me to him as a person. Lil wayne already has his success maybe not up to his own status but its there. I almost came to tears ith the thought that Lil wayne might die sooner than later but what held the tears back was when he said " I aint trying to kill myself of course...[but] you go when your suppose to go." That made the most of since to me in the article. He proceeded in saying "Ain't no such thing as dying before your time. What is your time?" "who the f**k told you you had a time?" So at least i learned what the real Dwayne Carter Jr. thinks about life and i love it.
