Britney Spears: Circus

Out with the new. In with the old.

Britney Spears
Circus (Jive)

At times, a pinch of sanity is all it takes to trigger the lights on a dimming career. Over the past two years, Britney Spears has corroded her pop royalty throne, damaging her image with bad performances, baby-momma-drama and rumors of insanity (shaving her head bald). However, with Spears’ sixth studio album, Circus (Jive), the mother of two exfoliates her grime and convincingly proves why she’s finally ready to cue the curtains and retrieve her spotlight.

Tipping a decade long residency within the music industry, Spears’ “comeback” is more so a restoration than a reinvention, using sugary pre-Blackout (Jive) formulas present throughout her highest peaks. “Out From Under” - sonically reminiscent of 2001’s hit “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” - features Spears wading in syrupy chords, replenishing her strength from a wounded relationship: ‘My heart will be unbroken / It will open up for everyone but you’, a presumed aim at ex-husband the second. “Womanizer,” pours right from the vessel of 2004’s Grammy-award-winning “Toxic,” bouncing Spears across addictive electro pop patterns just south of annoying and into euphoria. The alluringly simmered and Danja-produced “Blur” could easily hook on to the end of 2003’s “Early Morning,” while “Kill the Lights” finds Spears’ engulfed in her synthesized comfort zone, parading in techno fun.

Yet, what seems to point best to Circus’ charm is an abstinence from the sloshed vocals and production tyranny of Blackout. Spears is no orator, but her effort has certainly resurfaced, skipping on only the album’s final track, and unsurprisingly it’s solemn ballad. “My Baby” – a weak ode to Spears’ two sons – is left gasping for the thick coating of autotune flair needed to drown out the cracks. Something a couple spins of 2004’s “Everytime” might have patched up.

Although some artists may benefit from a new state of mind, Circus attests that Spears is best at just being her old self.
